Gavirgas

Mati:k's self-titled debut mines a rich vein of classic IDM, full of crispy rhythms and angular melodies. The tilted piano on "H," for example, hides beneath layers of sonic haze to create a paranoid feel, while "Dada Cat" takes a more psychedelic view. A twinkling mystery pervades "Indigo," but "Dada in Vinyl" clears more of that up for a more mellow melody, even if the percussion remains aggressive. The rhythm on "Pattern the Velvet Beta" doesn't clatter quite as much, but it is speedier, giving the track a propulsive feel. But the blissful piano chords on "Smart.M." show off his talent in blending melody with the beats (the hidden track afterwards concentrates more on a spacious dub exploration that eventually resolves into a deep 4/4). Given how strong this album it, it's a pity that Mati:k never produced more.
